We are pleased to announce that Kumaran Arumugam has been awarded the Doctor of Education in Adaptive Physical Education (Honoris Causa) by the American University of Business and Social Sciences, in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of physical education for individuals with disabilities in Singapore.
Since 2012, Mr. Arumugam has dedicated his career to supporting children with special needs. His journey began as a sports coach and physical education teacher, where he prioritized education over personal aspirations in sports. Over the years, he has held various leadership positions, including Assistant Head of Department (Sports) and Head of Department (Physical Education), demonstrating exceptional commitment to advancing educational standards in the field.
Among his noteworthy achievements, Mr. Arumugam secured a shoe sponsorship for 200 students from low-income backgrounds, ensuring they had proper footwear for sports. He has actively contributed to the growth of para-athletics in Singapore, collaborating with organizations such as the Singapore Taekwondo Federation and the Singapore Disability Sports Council.
In 2023, he launched the GoalBall29 program, aimed at preparing athletes for the ASEAN Para Games in 2029. His leadership was instrumental during the Singapore Para Athletes Track and Field 2024 event, where students he trained won multiple gold medals.
Mr. Arumugam's passion for adaptive sports and education has earned him numerous accolades, including the People’s Choice Community Changemaker of the Year and the Global Recognition Award in Special Education. He has also received a scholarship to pursue further studies in education and special education, with the ambition of inspiring future educators.
The International Association for Quality Assurance in Pre-Tertiary & Higher Education (QAHE) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Arumugam on this well-deserved honor and wishes him continued success in his endeavors to drive positive change in the field of special education.
