Professor Sandro Nuno Ferreira de Serpa

Sandro Serpa is an accomplished scholar and educator who has made significant contributions to the field of sociology, particularly in the areas of sociology of education, sociology of organizations, and the emerging field of digital society.

 

As an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of the Azores, Serpa has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service. With a diverse academic background, Serpa holds a PhD in Education with a specialization in Sociology of Education, a Master's in Sociology, a post-graduate degree in Sociology of Religions, and a Bachelor's in Sociology.

 

Serpa's impressive academic record is further highlighted by his leadership roles within the university. He has served as the Head of the Sociology Department, a Member of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the former Director of the Bachelor's in Social Work program. Additionally, he has been a member of various course committees and the Pedagogical Board of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences.

 

Serpa's research endeavors are equally remarkable, with an extensive publication record of over 340 works, including articles, books, book chapters, and conference proceedings. His research interests cover a wide range of topics, such as teaching sociology, sociology of education, sociology of organizations, organizational culture, scientific communication, digital society, digital literacy, Society 5.0, and the sociology of artificial intelligence.

 

Serpa's commitment to the advancement of knowledge in his field is further demonstrated by his involvement in several research projects and initiatives. He is an integrated researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences of the Azores (CICS.NOVA.UAçores) and a former Deputy Director of the same center. Serpa is also an elected member of the Executive Council of the Portuguese Association of Professionals in Industrial, Organizations and Work Sociology (APSIOT).

 

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of education, Serpa has been awarded the prestigious QAHE Excellence in Education Award (2024-2025).
